How to check an AI answer before you rely on it

Check five things: whether the answer shows a source, whether that source is the official one, how recent it is, whether it describes your situation or someone else's, and whether it admits what it does not know. An answer that passes all five is usually safe to act on. One that shows no source should be treated as a lead, not a fact.

1. Is there a source?
The fastest check. An answer that names where it came from can be verified in seconds. An answer with no source asks you to trust the tone of the sentence, and a confident sentence is not evidence.
2. Is it the official source?
For fees, deadlines, admissions and policies, the only source that counts is the organisation that sets them. A forum post or a news article about last year is a clue, not the rule.
3. How recent is it?
Fees change every year. Deadlines move. If an answer does not say when its source was published, open the source and look.
4. Whose rules does it describe?
The most common mistake an assistant makes is answering about a similar organisation instead of yours. Check that the source is your school, your employer, your country.
5. Does it say what it does not know?
A trustworthy answer marks its gaps: 'the page does not say whether late registration has a fee'. An answer with no gaps on a question that has them is usually filling them in.
