Applying to UK and US universities from Nigeria: WAEC, visas and funding

Short answer
Many UK universities do not admit students on the WASSCE alone: Manchester, for example, asks WAEC students to complete a recognised foundation programme first, or to offer A levels or the IB. Some accept a strong WAEC English grade instead of IELTS. US universities read WAEC results case by case. WAEC and the foundation year
Because the WASSCE differs from A levels, several UK universities, including Manchester, ask WAEC students to complete a university-recognised foundation programme first, or to apply with A levels or the International Baccalaureate. Others accept the WASSCE with extra study or for some courses. The rule is set university by university, and often course by course.

English tests
English is Nigeria's official language, but many universities still ask for a test such as IELTS or TOEFL. Some accept a high WAEC English grade instead: Manchester accepts B3 or B2, depending on the course, if taken within the last seven years. Ask Draimo each university's policy before you book and pay for a test you may not need.
Applying
UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with deadlines of 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, and 13 January 2027 for most other courses. Most US universities use the Common App, with early deadlines around 1 November 2026. Read the full guides for the UK and the US.
Visas
UK: if you have lived in Nigeria for six months or more, you need a tuberculosis test from an approved clinic before applying for a Student visa, and you must show tuition plus living costs held for 28 days.
US: after an offer, the university issues a Form I-20, and you attend a visa interview at the US Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos. Agent Mode can read the current government pages for both and turn them into a checklist.
