How much does it cost to study in Sweden? Tuition, fees and scholarships

Short answer
Studying in Sweden has no tuition for citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. Everyone else pays tuition, set by each university and programme, often several hundred thousand kronor for a full degree. You apply through universityadmissions.se: the application fee is SEK 900, and for autumn 2027 the deadline is 15 January 2027, with fees and documents due by 1 February. The Swedish Institute funds some master's students from eligible countries in full.

Who pays tuition
Citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, and holders of a Swedish permanent residence permit, do not pay tuition. Everyone else does. Fees are set per programme, so a master's in engineering and a master's in humanities at the same university can cost very different amounts.
Applying: the dates for autumn 2027
International applicants use universityadmissions.se, which serves every Swedish university. The first admission round for autumn 2027 closes on 15 January 2027; the SEK 900 application fee and your supporting documents are due by 1 February 2027. The early round exists so international students have time to pay tuition, get a residence permit and find housing.
Scholarships
The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals cover tuition and living costs for master's study, for citizens of a list of eligible countries that includes Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. Many universities also cut tuition for their strongest non-EU applicants. The SI application window for 2027-28 opens after the programme application deadline; ask Draimo for the current dates.
